Marian Wright Edelman Public Library to be dedicated Sunday afternoon Posted - 03-18-2010
Hundreds of special guests will converge on Marlboro County this weekend for a historic celebration: the dedication of the Marian Wright Edelman Public Library. The celebration will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, March 21, on the grounds of the brand-new library at 203 Fayetteville Avenue in Bennettsville. It will feature musical performances, speeches by local and visiting dignitaries, including Edelman herself, and a ceremonial ribbon cutting to make the dedication official....

Edelman known for civil rights, children’s causes Posted - 03-18-2010
Marian Wright Edelman was the youngest of five children born to the Rev. and Mrs. Arthur J. (Maggie) Wright in Bennettsville, where her father was a Baptist minister. She graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta in 1960, and three years later earned a law degree from Yale Law School. She worked for the NAACP Legal and Defense Fund first in New York and then in Jackson, Mississippi, becoming the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar.

Jury finds man guilty of murder Posted - 03-18-2010
A Bennettsville man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted last week of murder in the first degree. A jury deliberated for about an hour before returning a guilty verdict around 2 p.m. Thursday, March 11, against Kenwood Bright, in connection with the July 22, 2008, shooting death of Christopher Dease, also of Bennettsville. Judge William Seals then sentenced Bright, 28, of 307 North Everett Street, Bennettsville, to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Council gives 1st reading to budget with no tax, fee increases Posted - 03-18-2010
Bennettsville City Council amended its tree ordinance and gave first reading to its 2010-2011 budget Tuesday night. These actions occurred during their monthly council meeting at city hall. Tree ordinance passed The amended tree ordinance now enables the city to apply for a Tree City USA designation, which it enjoyed prior to 1986.

Partnership with NETC helps make new library Posted - 03-18-2010
Special to the Herald-Advocate) Northeastern Technical College (NETC) and Marlboro County joined forces in 2009 in an effort to bring more opportunities to Marlboro County citizens and NETC students. Townsend to play in All-American game Posted - 03-18-2010
Although the start of the 2010 high school football season is still five months away, one Marlboro County Bulldog already knows that he will get an extra game. Rising senior linebacker Lateek Townsend found out last week that he will be on the East roster in the Army All-American Bowl, January 8, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas.

Bulldogs win first region game Posted - 03-18-2010
Marlboro County used some well timed hits and an awesome pitching performance to start the region baseball season on the right foot. The Bulldogs defeated Darlington, 4-0, at Gliarmis Field Tuesday night. “Beau (Dees) was terrific on the mound. Darlington never figured out how to hit him and they have a pretty good team,” said head coach Phillip Blue.
